So sad to see that famous MGM sign and Leo the Lion being brought down to make way for a TV company which took over the lot – 44 acres- in 1986. (Though by that time the magic words on their own were already gone – it was MGM/UA from 1981).
Ted Turner had sold the lot to Lorimar-Telepictures.
Subsequently the area in Culver City was acquired by SonyPictures Studio.

The following pictures show the various transformations at MGM’s Main Gate. I wonder if MGM is even mentioned now in the tours of the Sony Studios.
I’m proud to say I went through the gate when it still had the MGM logo (in 1979 and 1980, with members of the Jeanette MacDonald International Fan Club.)
