Thanks to Comet Over Hollywood I was delighted to see a clip from a rare Irene Dunne film, STINGAREE (1934) .

But the clip isn’t of Irene singing, but of the one,the only Mary Boland who fancies herself as an opera singer. Mary is of course hilarious as she tries to impress an impresario with her wildly over- the- top rendition of “I Wish I Were a Fisherman”!.

Mary is dubbed but it doesn’t matter, it’s the way she puts it over, completely oblivious to the effect she is having on those watching.

I enjoyed the Comet’s review of the film which also starred Richard Dix in the title role.(Stingaree is an Australian outlaw!)
