September,1962: BETTE DAVIS  places this famous ad in Variety.

Bette later said it was a joke, but was it?

She had made only three films in the 5 years before this – “The Scapegoat “and “John Paul Jones “in 1959, and “Pocketful of Miracles ” in 1961.

The Broadway reference was probably The Night of the Iguana which she had done briefly in 1961.

Seems  incredible that this great actress, at the ‘advanced’ age of 54, wasn’t being offered good scripts.

That same year she made Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, so maybe the ad wasn’t such a bad idea.

“References Upon Request” does suggest a touch of humour.
