Another great find,STARS AND FILMS OF 1938 is a Daily Express publication, edited by Stephen Watts.
Although there are no film reviews, there are pages of pictures from lots of films, plus the glorious full page colour photos which were a feature of the 1937 annual I reviewed previously.
There is also an attempt to let picturegoers know how films are made – interviews with George Cukor and cinematographer,Harry Stradling.
In a (short) nod to British films and stars, Gracie Fields and Anna Neagle are featured.
1938 was another great year for Hollywood. Oscar winners were BETTE DAVIS (‘Jezebel’); SPENCER TRACY (‘Boys Town’); Best Director,FRANK CAPRA; Best Film, YOU CANT TAKE IT WITH YOU.
Stars who each had two films in the top twenty grossers of the year were DEANNA DURBIN,CLARK GABLE,ERROL FLYNN,TYRONE POWER and MACDONALD AND EDDY.
Stars making their film debut in 1938 included MAUREEN O’HARA (Kicking the Moon Around); WILLIAM HOLDEN (Prison Farm); JOHN GARFIELD (Four Daughters) and VINCENT PRICE (Service de Luxe).
I hope to get the annual that was issued in 1935 which has Garbo on the cover. I couldn’t find any entry for 1936 and I assume the series stopped with the outbreak of war in 1939.
I’d still love to know if America ever issued film annuals like these in the 30s and 40s.
The following posters reflect some of the films of 1938 ( not from the annual), followed by some of the lovely color plates from the annual.
Perfect teeth seems to be a requisite!
