Foreign posters of Barbara’s films can be very interesting, especially because of the unusual translations for some of the film titles.
WITNESS TO MURDER. (The only Witness)
You have to wonder, why bother changing it. Maybe they didn’t like ‘murder’ in the title.
I like that shot of Barbara and Gary Merrill.

No change here.
FORTY GUNS. (Forty Killers)
In contrast to Witness to Murder, here the word ‘killers’ is used , maybe more dramatic. Of course, that scene from the end of the film, is so dramatic.
i wonder how much control the Hollywood studio had over foreign advertising material.
THE MAVERICK QUEEN. (My Lover and a Bandit)
This title just seems funny!
CATTLE QUEEN OF MONTANA. (Queen of the Prairie)
Maybe the French might not have been too familiar with Montana.
CLASH BY NIGHT. (The Demon wakes at night.)
Sounds like a horror movie.
THE LADY GAMBLES. (NO ENTRY)
Another example of a change that doesn’t add anything.
Nice close-up of Barbara.

A bit verbose.

No change. Nice black and white use of photos rather than paintings.

No mention of the first Mrs Carroll!
DOUBLE INDEMNITY. (Insurance On The Death)
‘double indemnity’ was a legal term used in the States.
LADY OF BURLESQUE. (Star Varieties)
Burlesque, maybe too American for Spain. I like the wording on the poster – Music! Mystery! Crime!
MEET JOHN DOE. (We Need Each Other)
I think I have the right translation.
The Swedish translation changes the title completely. Again, ‘John Doe’ probably wouldn’t be known in Sweden.

THE PLOUGH AND THE STARS
i initially couldn’t figure out the first part of this translation . ‘Las Estrellas’ is the Stars, but ‘La Osa Mayor’ seemed odd.
In fact it is a literal translation of the star constellation known as ‘the Plough’ . ‘La Osa Major’ means Ursa Major – the great bear – which is the official name of the Plough group of stars.

Some are quite hysterical and or odd!
I’ve seen so many of these foreign posters, I think the studios just left it up to their foreign representatives as to how they would look, or what the title translation would be.
Great selection of posters, Vienna – interesting to see how tiny Stanwyck is on the General Yen poster, and how big Toshia Mori is. I feel the title might be better in that translation, for plot-related reasons… though not nearly as memorable!
Also must agree that the Message to Garcia pic looks nothing like Barbara!

Funny how they could paint John Boles perfectly well. Surely the studio would have provided photos.

In Brazil, the coolest change was that Double Indemnity became Pact of Blood. Not very original, but still…

My first black and white movie I ever saw was (Camille) That put me in forever! I had seen it in the annie movie and wanted to know what was playing as they sat in that theater. Then one night the strange love of Martha ivers came on and I fell in love, stanwyck has been my favorite ever since!!
She’s a great actress.
