They made a great team in HIS GIRL FRIDAY. With Howard Hawks’s help, they took fast talking and wise-cracking to a new plain.
CARY GRANT and ROSALIND RUSSELL seemed like a match made in heaven, another Powell and Loy or Tracy and Hepburn, but the winning formula was never repeated. I’ve often wondered why.
Did the right script not come along, were there conflicting contractual obligations? Who knows.
Off screen, they were close socially – Cary was best man at Rosalind’ s marriage to Frederick Brisson.

And yet it never happened.
Still, we have Walter and Hildy, two indelible characters of classic Hollywood. Even Ralph Bellamy couldn’t come between them!
So, thank you, Cary and Roz. It only takes one film to make a team unforgettable.
They are on the phone a lot!
Show me the teeth!

On the set with Howard Hawks
Good question! I wonder why they didn’t do more films. I like them together as much as I like Grant and Hepburn — and much more than Tracy and Hepburn.
Such a pity Hawks didn’t bring them together again.
And I too prefer Grant and Hepburn.
Love all the pics in this post! Yes, they had such great chemistry in this film.
They were a great team. Thanks for visiting.
