I’m on the mailing list for the DVD seller, OLDIES.COM who never give up trying to encourage me to buy.
Each email message always manage to say the same thing – just a little differently.
eg “DONT MISS OUT ON THOSE CLOSE-OUT DVDS! ”
“GREAT DEALS ON HOT TITLES! ”
“CLEARANCE DVD FAVORITES”
“MASSIVE WARNER BROTHERS DVD SALE! ”
“BEST SELLING CLEARANCE MOVIES! ”
Oldies.Com was founded in 1980. Its sister company ( both are based outside Philadelphia) is Alpha Video.
Alpha Video is claiming copyright on public domain films which they have remastered. Not sure how that works legally.
One of the latest messages from Oldies is about serials and it made me think about all these vintage serials which were so popular.
The serials, mainly from Republic and Columbia, represent a time and era which can never be replicated.
For a review of one of those serials, “Daredevils of the Red Circle”, check out Laura’s blog at http://laurasmiscmusings.blogspot.co.uk
Dick Tracy (1937) , a fifteen parter from Republic, is on Talking Pictures TV this month.
Thanks, Bob. Must have a look at it.
Flash Gordon was my “go to” film serial when I went to the ABC Minor shows at our local Ritz cinema in the 1950’s! Terrific entertainment for young film fans: even today, it still continues to give enjoyment in those jaded times we occupy nowadays!
Who can forget Ming the Merciless!
They can try to copyright whatever changes they introduce, such as wraparounds or altered (improved?) soundtracks, but otherwise, they don’t have a leg to stand on. They have a distinctive-looking warehouse along a highway near where I used to work. They’re more or less in Plymouth Meeting, PA.
Thanks for the information,Todd.
