Marjorie Reynolds and Virginia Dale were surprise costars for Astaire and Crosby. Neither had major roles in ‘A’ films before or after Holiday Inn. Mary Martin was listed as a possible signing for this film.
Marjorie was dubbed by Martha Mears in the film. I’d like to see her 1944 film, UP IN MABEL’S ROOM, with Dennis O’Keefe and Gail Patrick. She played William Bendix’s wife for 5 years in TV’s “The Life of Riley” (1953-58).

News to me, but Samuel Goldwyn wasn’t happy with the box office of THE BISHOP’S WIFE. He retitled it CARY AND THE BISHOP’S WIFE for some American markets. Adding Cary’s name added 25% to business!
“Have you heard about CARY AND THE BISHOP’S WIFE?”
According to AFI.com, Cary Grant was originally cast as the Bishop and David Niven as the angel ‘Dudley’, but the roles were reversed.

Can I nominate my own favourite The Cheaters, a 1945 Republic picture available on You Tube. An awful title for a Xmas film which makes it sound like a crime drama. Glowing performances, in rare starring roles, for Joseph Schildkraut and Ona Munson supported by great character actors like Eugene Pallette and Billie Burke. I always watch it on Xmas Day.
If you’ve never seen it you are in for a treat.
How could I forget The Cheaters described on IMDB as “My Man Godfrey meets It’s a Wonderful Life”. A shame about the title but I agree it is well worth seeing.
Paramount tried to borrow Alice Faye and Joan Leslie for Holiday Inn. Imagine Alice dancing with Fred. It’s hard to see why they gave Marjorie such a big push. She just didn’t have star quality. On my first visit to LA I was at a dinner party where two young men turned out to live next door to Virginia Dale. Sadly Virginia was suffering from cancer and died a few months later.
That would have been interesting casting.
